I Will Live By Faith

What’s the message of Hebrews? The Superiority of Christ. In every way On the basis of this teaching, the readers were encouraged to respond, 10.19. Today’s text tells us how they were to respond: in faith (10.22), hope (10.23), and love (10.24). Those who strive to be vessels of honor will find these indicators in their life.

I. 10.22 – FAITH: LET US DRAW NEAR

  1. 22 – draw near in full assurance of faith. On what foundation does this stand?
    1. 10.19 – the cross. The shed blood of Jesus. His death opened the way.
      1. 4.16 – come boldly.to obtain mercy.
    2. 10.20 – This is the new and living way Jesus opened through His flesh.
      1. New: “freshly slaughtered.”
      2. Living: Jesus is alive. We are alive with Him. See Ephesians 2.4-7.
    3. 10.21 – Jesus is the High Priest in the presence of God.
    4. 10.22 – This shows us how to come.
      1. 10.22a – We come with a true heart. See Jeremiah 24.7.
      2. 10.22b – We come in full assurance of faith. See 11.6.
      3. 10.22c – We do this with hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience.
      4. 10.22d – We have our bodies washed with pure water. (Baptism)
        1. Your baptism was a spiritual cleansing, 1 Peter 3.21.

II. 10.23 – HOPE: LET US HOLD FAST

  1. 23 – hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.
    1. James 1.22 – be a doer – not only a hearer.
    2. 10.23b – Do it without wavering. Always keep looking forward.
    3. Colossians 1.21 – make it your objective to continue in the faith.
  2. Hold on…. to hope.
    1. It is the trust that God will keep His promise and do what He said in the end.
    2. 10.23c – for He who promised is faithful. See also 1 Thessalonians 5.24.

III. 10.24 – LOVE: LET US CONSIDER ONE ANOTHER

  1. Consider – To direct ones whole mind to an object.
  2. Stir up – provoke, irritate, to incite, to stimulate.
    1. Stimulating good work and love go hand in hand with the Christian experience.
    2. 10.25 – a practical application.

  1. This is living by faith.
