Shoes of the Gospel of Peace & the Shield of Faith

Satan opposes everything God does. How are we going to win? How are we going to know the victory? Scripture has given us the solutions. A great one is the one we’re studying this week in Ephesians 6.13-17. You can win the war against the forces of hell. Tonight, we’ll look at how Paul uses the shoes of a soldier and his shield as illustrations of the weapons we have to fight Satan.

I. 6.15 – Why Paul Uses Shoes As an Illustration

  1. Many wars have been lost because the soldiers didn’t have adequate shoes.
  2. Romans would use think-soled, hobnailed, boots that had straps on them that were tied in all directions, making it tremendously tight.

II. Christians need to have shoes, too.

  1. You have to have a solid base.
  2. 6.15a – Your feet are to be shod with readiness.
    1. Remember, 6.14a – Paul is talking about about being able to stand…
    2. Not slip or slide, and not fall when we are under attack.
  3. 6.15b – the gospel of peace. “Good news” brings peace.
    1. See Roman 5.1-10. 5.1-2 contains a statement of fact.
      1. 5.6-10 gives us a description of who we once were.
      2. 5.1-2 – is the gospel – we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
    2. Now, we are on the same side as God.
      1. 2 Corinthians 5.19 – God was ____________________ the world to himself
      2. Colossians 1.20 – we have peace by Jesus’ blood.
  4. We are firm in the great truth that we are at peace with God.

III. 5.16 – The Shield of Faith

  1. 5.16 – This shield was probably 4 ft tall and 2-3 ft wide. It was a “long, oblong shield.
    1. Given to soldiers on the front line for complete protection.
  2. 5.16 – in all circumstances. You need it because it provides double protection. From what?
  3. 5.16b – all the flaming darts of the evil one.

IV. For Personal Application:

  1. How often do you think/remember that God is on your side?
  2. Do you ever leave your shield behind? What happens when you do?
  3. Why is it important to have your shield with you in all circumstances?
  4. How can you bring more contentment into your life?

Conclusion:

  1. Ephesians 6.13 – Are you using the instruments God has supplied so that you may have success?
