Servant Leadership in the Home

Many families struggle silently with abuse, manipulation, and domination. Abuse is more widespread than we know. Today’s lesson comes out of 2 Corinthians 11. In it, we’ll see a contrast between Christ like leadership and worldly leadership.

I. FALSE LEADERSHIP:

    1. Enslaves – 11.20a – makes slaves of you. This is manipulation.
    2. Exploits – 11.20b – devours you. Bad leaders suck the life out of others.
    3. Entraps – 11.20c – takes advantage of you. Entrapment.
    4. Dominates – 11.30d – puts on airs. Lording over people, 1 Peter 5.3.
    5. Humiliates – 11.20e – strikes you in the face. Literal striking?

II. TRUE LEADERSHIP SEEMS WEAK.

    1. 11.21 – Paul was too weak to abuse them. No beating them into submission.
    2. Do you see the contrast here?
      1. A Christ-like person vs. a worldly person, servant of Satan.
      2. The power of coercion vs. the power of the cross.
    3. Jesus’ leadership: Look at these Scriptures:
      1. Matthew 12.20 – A bruised reed he will not break.
      2. 2 Corinthians 10.1 – Jesus was meek and gentle.
      3. Luke 4.40 – Jesus healed sickness and disease.
      4. Luke 13.32 – Jesus cast out demons.
      5. Matthew 18.8 – Jesus cleansed lepers.
      6. Matthew 18.2 – Jesus held children.
    4. Mark 10.42-45. Compare 2 Corinthians 1.24.

III. HOW THIS RELATES TO THE HUSBAND AND HIS FAMILY:

    1. Husbands, the responsibility of servant leadership falls on you.
      1. Some men tend toward one of two extremes.
        1. check out and abandon leadership.
        2. micromanager, dictator.
      2. These are distortions of male leadership.
        1. Passive abandonment is not like Christ. See Ephesians 5.25-27.
        2. Harsh leadership is not like Christ. It is oppressive, controlling.
    2. Abusive leadership dishonors. Servant leadership honors.

CONCLUSION:

    1. You can’t go back and change your past. But, you can have a new future through Jesus. 1 Corinthians 6.11.
    2. Husbands, lead your family into the principles of Galatians 5.22-25.
    3. Do you need to get your life right today? Now is the time.
