Making It Work at Kettering

Did the Jerusalem church have any advantages over us, making growth easier to attain? We have everything they did in order to grow. We are either going to progress in maturity and become more like the Jerusalem church or, we will become satisfied with where we are, becoming more like the typical church. To make this choice, we have to see the advantages they had and work to purposefully accomplish what happened naturally for them.

I. A WIDESPREAD ENTHUSIASM OF SOMETHING NEW.

    1. In the Jerusalem church, even the apostles were new to the church.
      1. Every person had been dealing with the problem of sin, and were experiencing a new solution – forgiveness through Jesus.
      2. They had just come to realize what God had truly done for them.
    2. Where are we regarding enthusiasm and excitement over our salvation?
      1. If everyone in the congregation were like you, which one would we be?
      2. Revelation 2.1-7 – Many congregations today are like the one in Ephesus.
      3. If we want to be like the Jerusalem church, we must not lose the love we had at first.

II. FREEDOM FROM TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO WORSHIP AND WORK:

    1. Many NI churches have established scriptural traditions for the work and worship of the congregation. They are little more than unspoken laws that no one should question or propose changing.
      1. Acts 6.1-6 – The apostles changed their approach.
        1. 6.3 – Told the congregation to pick out 7 men to lead the work.
        2. 6.4 – Apostles basically say they didn’t have time to do this work. Others were given the responsibility.
      2. 6.5 – Was there widespread outrage? No. The statement pleased the whole gathering.
    2. Where are we?
      1. Are we more like the Jerusalem church?
      2. What if the congregation were just like you? Change does to necessarily mean we have deviated from God’s pattern or plan.
      3. We must be mature enough to know the difference between turning from God’s pattern and simply changing an approach while continuing to be in line with Gods’ plan for his church.

III. SPEND TIME WITH OTHER CHRISTIANS, WORSHIPPING, WORKING, AND BEING TOGETHER

    1. In many NI churches today, you will often hear people saying they don’t get together as much as they used to. Everyone wises somebody would do something.
    2. Acts 2.46-47 – Members of the church met in each others homes day by day. Social time and spiritual time.
    3. Where are we in spending our time together?
      1. If everyone at Kettering just like you, where would we be?
      2. Colossians 3.1-2 – Are we forgetting to prepare for eternity?
      3. Luke 10.38-42- How many are like Martha?
    4. Ephesians 5.16. Making the best use of the time is spending time house to house praising God and being together.

CONCLUSION:

    1. Let us never be the average American church. Let us be, extraordinary.
    2. Do you need Jesus?
