Life in a Changing World

As we go December, we’ll be taking a hard look at Scripture. What does it say about those who have gone before? What kind of moral conditions did they have to deal with? How did they overcome? And, how did God deal with all the immorality and dishonoring of His name? Romans 1.18-32 gives us the answer.

I. HAS GOD TURNED HIS BACK ON AMERICA?

    1. For the first 175 years of its existence, ours was largely a country that exalted God.
      1. We’ve never been perfect. But,
      2. Our people have mostly lived by Christian values and morals.
      3. These things are no more – and our nation is coming apart.
    2. God can and will turn His back on a society when it rejects Him.
      1. It is seen throughout Scripture:
        1. Judges 10.13; 16.18-21; Proverbs 1.24-31; Hosea 4.17.
      2. There comes a time when God abandons men. See Matthew 15.14.
      3. We’re not the first to experience this.
        1. Acts 14.16 – in past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways.
        2. All nations go through a cycle of having the truth, rejecting the truth, and being abandoned by God.
    3. What does it mean to be abandoned by God? See Romans 1.24, 26, 28.

II. THREE STEPS IN THE PROGRESSION OF ABANDONMENT

    1. 1.24-25 – Step 1: Moral and Sexual Default. Lust dominates the heart.
    2. 1.26-27 – Step 2: Homosexuality.
    3. 1.28 – Step 3: A Debased Mind.
      1. What flows out of this type of mind?
      2. 1.29-31 – all manner of immorality.
      3. 1.32 – Approval and encouragement of increased sinful behavior.

III. FOUR REASONS FOR GOD’S WRATH.

    1. 1.19 – Revelation.
      1. Natural revelation; Reason; Conscience.
    2. 1.21 – Rejection. Their foolish hearts were darkened.
      1. Move forward thinking they can live life anyway they want without consequence.
    3. 1.22 – Rationalization. Fools: From the word we use for “moron.”
    4. 1.23 – Religion.
      1. 1.25 – Exchanged the truth for a lie.
      2. 1.28 – No longer acknowledged God.

CONCLUSION:

    1. Psalm 81.10-16 – What happened to Israel? Is there any hope?
    2. What does God want to do for us?
    3. He wants us to listen to His ways. He wants us to walk in His ways.
