Hophni & Phinehas

Today, we’ll go back to the Old Testament and learn about two men who ultimately lost their lives because of extreme hypocrisy. In fact, their actions moved God to bring an end to their family’s priestly dynasty. What are some applications for today’s spiritual priests who occupy God’s church?

I. WHAT SCRIPTURE RECORDS ABOUT HOPHNI & PHINEHAS

  1. 1 Samuel 2.12: Worthless – “not of use.”
  2. 2.12-17 – Describes a progression.
    1. 2.13-14 – How their sin started. See Leviticus 7.29-34 for specifics.
    2. 2.15 – Their sin grew. Removed choice parts before the sacrifice.
    3. 2.16a – Threatened force – which destroyed the spirit of worship.
    4. 2.17b – The men treated the offering of the Lord with contempt.
  3. 2.22b – Seduction and immoral acts with female temple assistants.

II. GODS JUDGMENT

  1. 1 Samuel 2.27-28…
  2. 1 Samuel 2.31 – Eli and the entire house of Ithamar would be wiped out.
    1. 1 Samuel 4.10-11 – Hophni and Phinehas killed by the Philistines.
      1. See also Psalm 78.60, 64. Priests at Shiloh murdered.
    2. 1 Samuel 4.18 – Eli dies.
    3. 1 Samuel 21-22 – Eli’s great grandson in Nob + 85 priests are killed.
    4. 1 Kings 2.27 – Abiathar, removed from the priesthood by Solomon.
  3. The priesthood of Shiloh was an unfaithful priesthood.
    1. 1 Samuel 2:33, 36 – They would be a disgrace and a source of continual grief.
    2. Why? 2.29a: They scorned Gods sacrifices and offerings.

III. THREE THINGS TO WALK AWAY WITH TODAY

  1. Damage caused by hypocrisy can be immeasurable.
    1. 1 Samuel 2.17, 2.22a – Everyone could see what was going on.
    2. Ezekiel 36.20 – Israel had knowledge of God’s will, yet refused to live by it. What did the Gentiles think? What happens today?
  2. God always deals with hypocrisy in a serious manner.
    1. Ezekiel 36.23 – You think God cares about His name? See 1 Samuel 2.30.
    2. Ezekiel 14.1-11 – Focus on 14.8-9.
    3. Matthew 18.6 – Hypocrites place stumbling blocks in front of others.
    4. Matthew 24.45-51 – Which type of servant are you? Faithful? Or wicked?
  3. Your role as a holy priest is of the greatest importance. See 1 Peter 2.5, 9-10.
    1. Romans 12.1-2 – Our sacrifices must be acceptable.

CONCLUSION:

1 Peter 1.22-2.3 – Stay true to your calling.
