Faithful Children

Ephesians 6 continues to focus on the spirit-filled family life mentioned back in Chapter 5. God has always held the family in high esteem, Psalm 127.3-5. As we examine Ephesians 6.1-3 today, we’ll look at three main points. We’ll see how children can obey and honor their parents. And, we’ll discuss how parents can get them to do this.

I. 6.1 – ACTIONS MATTER:

    1. 6.1 – “Children” includes all children who are old enough to understand.
    2. Proverbs speaks on children heeding their parents:
      1. 1.1-4, 8-10; 2.1-6; 3.1-2; 4.1-4, 10; 5.1; 7.1; 8.32-33.
      2. This wisdom is imparted with discipline. See Proverbs: 12.1; 13.1; 15.5.
      3. Luke 2.52 – 4 categories your kids are growing in: wisdom, stature, favor with men, and favor with God.
    3. Ephesians 6.1a – “Obey.”Means to submit.
      1. 6.1b – They are to do this “in the Lord.”
      2. Ephesians 6.1c – “For this is right.” (The “why” of obedience.)
        1. Because it is right.
        2. Because it honors God.

II. 6.2-3 – ATTITUDE MATTERS:

    1. 6.2-3 – This is the attitude that goes along with the behavior.
      1. Obedience is not to be selfish or reluctant. It is not to be unwilling.
      2. Coupled with honor, respect, reverence, regard, love, and affection.
    2. 6.2b – if a child honors his/her parents – there is a promise.
    3. 6.3 – It consists of two things:
      1. 6.3a – Quality of life: “that it may go well with you.”
      2. 6.3b – Quantity of life: “that you may live long in the land.”

III. HOW WE GET OUR CHILDREN TO FOLLOW THROUGH:

    1. Proverbs 3.11 – correction/discipline. Not all discipline is negative.
    2. Proverbs 10.13 – Gets their attention.
      1. 19.18 – see the urgency in discipline.
      2. 22.15 – Painful, immediate, and physical consequences.
      3. 23.13 – It might actually save your child’s soul from hell.
    3. Why is it so important to discipline? 29.15, 17; 28.24.

CONCLUSION:

    1. Ephesians 5.18-21. Have you submitted to Christ?
