A Faith That Spans Generations

Matthew 5.14-16 – Christians are to be like cities on hills that are visible at a great distance, esp. at night. Isn’t that a great picture of the home in today’s culture? One of God’s most effective tools for extending His kingdom is the godly family. God has provided Christian homes for the perpetuation of the faith. Today, we will look at the family of Timothy in 2 Timothy 1.5. They instilled in him a convincing, consistent, contagious, and confident faith. These are the characteristics of a faith that spans generations.

I. 2 Timothy 1.5a – We need a convincing faith.

    1. 2 Timothy 1.5 — sincere.
      1. Genuine faith is real/convincing. It goes down deep.
      2. This is the type of faith that will impact our kids.
    2. Real, authentic, without hypocrisy.
      1. Deuteronomy 6.6-9 NIV
    3. Faith must be revealed in the total structure/fabric of who we are.
      1. Day to day prayer
      2. Resolute trust; faith; fairness; love; faith during storms of life.
      3. Willing to admit shortcomings – leaning hard on God’s grace.

II. 2 Timothy 1.5b – It must be a consistent faith.

    1. 2 Timothy 1.5 – genuine faith first dwelt in Lois/Eunice.
      1. Dwelt: abide/live. It has staying power and performance.
      2. Dwell used by Paul in describing what it means to be a Christian:
      3. 2 Corinthians 6.16; 2 Timothy 1.14; Colossians 3.16.
    2. Faith dwelt in Lois & Eunice – regardless of the circumstances.

III. 2 Timothy 3.14-15 – It must be a contagious faith.

    1. Lois & Eunice had a passion for God.
      1. 2 Timothy 3.14-15 – and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings..
      2. Lois & Eunice could not keep quiet about God.  As soon as Timothy was old enough, they began pumping faith into him.
    2. Our faith must be just as contagious.
      1. Must always look for open doors to speak about Jesus.
      2. Look for spontaneous moments to make kids thirst for God.

IV. 2 Timothy 1.1 – It must be a confident faith.

    1. 2 Timothy 1.1 – Faith is the “promise of life which is in Christ Jesus.”
      1. Paul is talking about absolute faith. A life centered in Jesus.
      2. Faith was never meant to be just a mental assertion – but a living faith.
    2. Such a confident faith is the only kind we can pass on contagiously.
      1. If we are not sure what we believe, how will we make anyone else certain?

Conclusion:

    1. Project yourself into the future. Go past your children to your grandchildren.
      1. What do you see?  Will your faith survive your children?
      2. Is your faith convincing, consistent, contagious, and confident?
